Under the Smart City project, Belagavi has received an additional grant of Rs 135 crore for scientific and proper management of solid waste. Belgaum is the only city from Karnataka to be selected for this grant.

A Quadrilateral Agreement was signed between the Union Ministry of Urban Development, the State Representative KUIDFC, Belgaum Smart City and the Municipal.  A period of 3 years has been fixed for the implementation of the draft plan prepared for solid waste management. The plan will be completed by March 2028.

Speaking on this, Hanumantha Kaladagi, Environmental Engineer   said, we have prepared a plan to generate income especially from solid waste management using a grant of Rs 135 crore. This includes a biogas unit, recycling of 25 construction waste and debris daily, upgrading of 6 dry waste management units, 15 secondary garbage and transportation centers, upgrading of the Integrated Command Center, purchase of various types of high-end vehicles and robotic machines, installation of 200 state-of-the-art CCTVs in black spots for information, knowledge and communication, production of charcoal from horticultural waste and chopped tree waste (selling at Rs 6 per kg), recycling and manufacturing of various items from dry waste, etc. On April 10, a team from France will visit   and inspect the location of all the units.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner B Shubha said, it is a matter of great joy that Belgaum Smart City is the only option in the entire state. We will make full use of the Rs 135 crore grant and try to generate good revenue along with solid waste management.
