River Water Rises in Haveri, Three Bridges Submerged, Villages Cut Off

HAVERI:

The water levels in the Varada and Tungabhadra rivers are steadily rising due to heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats and local showers across the district. As a result, three key bridges have been submerged, disrupting connectivity for six villages now forced to rely on alternative routes.

The rising river water has submerged the short bridge over the Varada River between Naganur and Kudala villages, compelling residents to travel longer distances for daily needs. Another submerged bridge is located on the Varada River, connecting Kalasur village in Savanur taluk to Devagiri via Kolur. The shortcut that once allowed villagers to reach Haveri within minutes now requires a journey of several hours.

Similarly, the small bridge connecting Lakmapura in Hanagal taluk to Balambida village has also gone underwater, isolating residents and complicating commutes.

The situation is causing concern among riverside communities. Many fear a repeat of last year’s floods when heavy rain in the Ghats led both the Varada and Tungabhadra rivers to overflow. Several villages—including Neeralagi, Savur, Chikkalingadahalli, and Konanathambagi—were partially submerged in 2024. Residents of low-lying areas like Savur near Bankapur were put on high alert and monitored closely during that period.

Locals now warn that a similar scenario could unfold again this year if rainfall continues. The increasing river flow is already affecting agricultural activities and limiting access to basic services.

Authorities have yet to issue an official flood alert, but villagers are urging the district administration to take precautionary measures and restore connectivity as soon as possible.
