The Manava Bandhutva Vedike, in association with various social organisations, celebrated Basava Panchami by distributing milk and prasadam to children in government schools and hostels. The programme was led by District In-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi.
As part of the celebration, activists visited several schools and the BR Ambedkar Government Pre-Matric Boys' Hostel in Nehru Nagar. The event was formally inaugurated by Allama Prabhu Swamiji of Naganur Rudrakshi Mutt, who stressed the importance of understanding the essence of festivals rather than blindly following rituals.
“There is a need to celebrate festivals in a scientific and modern way. Instead of fostering superstitions, they should convey messages of goodwill and original values,” Swamiji said. He further added, “We have evolved many old rituals after discovering the truth. Rather than wasting milk on rituals, it should be given to hungry children.”
Rahul Jarkiholi, General Secretary of the State Youth Congress, echoed similar sentiments. He emphasized that Nagar Panchami and similar festivals should be observed by providing nutrition to the poor, sick, and orphaned children instead of engaging in symbolic wastage.
Basavaraj Channayanavar, Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department, stated that such socially aware celebrations should be organized annually, especially in the presence of children, to create a lasting impact on young minds.
Prasadam and milk were distributed to hundreds of children during the celebration. Basavaraj Rotti, District President of Jagatik Lingayat Mahasabha, Tholi Bharamanna, Divisional Coordinator of Manava Bandhutva Vedike, Deepak Gudaganatti, District Unit President of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and Suresh Gavannavar participated.
