In a key decision aimed at administrative and developmental restructuring, the Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved the renaming of Ramanagara district as "Bengaluru South District".

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who hails from the region, made the announcement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He called the move “a new chapter in development”, stating, “From now on, Ramanagara will be known as Bengaluru South District.”

Ramanagara was originally part of the Bengaluru Rural District, and later designated as a separate entity. However, the demand to reflect its proximity and growing integration with Bengaluru led to the push for renaming.

“All MLAs of the district collectively decided to retain Ramanagara as the district headquarters, while adopting a new name — Bengaluru South — for broader administrative identity,” said Shivakumar.

He emphasised that the district headquarters will remain unchanged, and the rebranding is meant to enhance administrative efficiency and align with the city's expanding urban limits.

However, the move has not been without opposition. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who also has strong roots in Ramanagara, has opposed the renaming, signalling potential political friction ahead.

The decision is expected to evoke varied responses across political and public circles, especially with elections on the horizon and local identities at stake.
