Premature monsoon brings cheer to farmers, calls for government support
BENGALURU
The early arrival of the southwest and eastern monsoons in Karnataka has brought much-needed relief and optimism to farmers across the state. Entering on May 24—well ahead of the usual first week of June—the monsoon has broken historical records and set the stage for an early sowing season.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted above-average rainfall for June and July, raising hopes for a productive agricultural season. In May 2025 alone, Karnataka received 245 mm of rainfall, while coastal districts recorded a remarkable 764 mm—surpassing the previous record of 706 mm set in May 1918.
Farmers, now preparing their fields, are hopeful of a successful sowing season. Encouragingly, the Department of Agriculture has stepped up to ensure the availability of essential inputs. It has stocked more seeds and fertilisers than required and begun distribution through farmer contact centres at subsidised rates.
Adding to the preparedness, technology has been integrated into the distribution system. Seed bags now come with QR codes that farmers can scan to instantly verify the certification and authenticity of the seeds.
While the timely monsoon is a blessing, experts and farmer groups urge the government to continue supporting agricultural activities by improving infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted supply of inputs, and providing real-time updates and advisories to farmers.
With favourable rainfall and adequate support, the state is poised for a strong start to the 2025 sowing season.
“The monsoon season is beginning. Officials have been instructed to be careful not to face any problem in the supply of seeds and fertilizers. There is no shortage of fertilizers at present. There is a necessary stock of seeds and fertilizers, and quality seeds should be tested and supplied to the farmers. The farmers should be provided with the necessary fertilizers and pesticides. We have instructed the officials to be careful not to face any problem in the monsoon,” N Chaluvarayaswamy, Agriculture Minister.
