District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr GP Renuprasad on Friday emphasised that maintaining population stability is a shared responsibility vital for the country’s development. He was speaking at an awareness rally organised to mark World Population Day at the Buddanagar Health Centre.
Flagging off the rally alongside Municipal Council member Sridevi Chakravarthy, Dr Renuprasad said, “India is on the path to becoming the most populous country, and this brings challenges like poverty, pollution, and resource scarcity.” He warned that rapid urbanisation, driven by migration for employment, is worsening environmental degradation.
District Family Welfare Officer Dr Rekha noted that Karnataka’s fertility rate is 1.7, and 1.8 in Chitradurga—indicating families are having fewer than two children on average. She stressed the importance of temporary modern contraceptive methods over permanent ones to sustain this trend.
District RCH Officer Dr Abhinav promoted the use of Copper T 380-A, which prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years, and PPIUCD for spacing between births. He urged couples to make informed choices to help maintain population balance.
Taluk Health Officer Dr BV Girish added that schools and colleges are being targeted to spread awareness among the youth about the consequences of unchecked population growth and the importance of stability.
The event highlighted the pressing need for public participation and awareness in controlling population growth and securing a sustainable future.
