The process of capturing and relocating stray dogs, which has been a growing concern in the city, was officially commenced from Tuesday.   The city council staff have made preparations for this operation.

Residents have been voicing complaints about the increasing presence of stray dogs in major areas and roads of the city. There have also been reports of attacks on children and the elderly by these dogs.

In response to the rising complaints, city council members and officials discussed the issue in a general meeting. Chairperson Shashikala Malagi and Vice-Chairperson Mallikarjuna Sattenahalli directed the initiation of the relocation process for the stray dogs.

The city council had tendered for the capture and safe relocation of the dogs. However, no one had applied for the tender, which stalled the process of dog capturing temporarily.

After robust discussions in the general meeting regarding the stray dogs, a decision was made to proceed with their relocation, with objections invited. Since no objections were raised, the dog capturing process is now set to commence, receiving approval and appreciation from the public.

The city officials had expressed concerns about potential opposition from animal welfare groups during the dog capturing process. To address this, the council chairperson convened a special meeting inviting representatives from animal welfare organizations,  e animal husbandry department, and others.

The increase in stray dogs in the city has made the elderly and children fearful of walking on streets. We will ensure that the dogs are captured without causing them harm and relocated to a safe area, stated the chairperson. This announcement received unanimous agreement from all participants in the meeting, paving the way for the operation to begin.

A special operation will be conducted   to capture stray dogs, assisted by a team of experts from Shivamogga.
