The North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has taken a compassionate step by introducing a specialised counselling programme aimed at supporting employees who are primary caregivers to children with serious health conditions. These dedicated sessions will provide emotional support, practical guidance, and coping strategies to help staff members manage their dual responsibilities effectively.

The counselling programme will feature qualified mental health professionals who understand the unique challenges faced by employees caring for children with disabilities. Regular sessions will allow employees to discuss their concerns openly. The initiative will also include workshops on stress management, time management, and accessing available healthcare resources.

Chief Labour and Welfare Officer PY Nayak said that the programme will create support groups where employees can connect with others facing similar situations, fostering a sense of community and mutual understanding. The NWKRTC management will work closely with these employees to develop flexible working arrangements where possible, enabling them to attend to their children's medical appointments and special needs, he said.

M Priyanga, Managing Director of NWKRTC, said that initially they conducted a special deaddiction programme for employees, with over 20 members attending. The programme was found to be highly beneficial. Based on the positive response and feedback, they planned a specialised counselling programme for child care employees.

Information was collected from all depots under NWKRTC about employees whose children are suffering from disabilities, serious illnesses, and other conditions. These employees were then asked to attend the programme in Hubballi. Over 125 employees attended the programme and received counselling, during which many shared the challenges they face in managing family responsibilities primarily during working hours. Employees reported difficulties in taking their wards for health checkups and requested transfers to their hometowns or nearby locations.
