BALLARI – The picturesque Narihalla reservoir, located near Taranagar, has reached its full storage capacity and is currently discharging excess water. The reservoir, a vital source of drinking water for Sandur and Donimalai towns, began releasing water through two of its five gates starting Friday.

With a storage capacity of 0.8 tmcft and a maximum water level of 542.3 metres, the reservoir is now at 542 metres, receiving a steady inflow of 700 cusecs. According to Assistant Engineer Dhanarjun Reddy, heavy rainfall in the upstream areas has caused a significant increase in water inflow, prompting the release of 1,400 cusecs since Thursday night.

Authorities have issued timely warnings to residents of downstream gram panchayat villages and Kurekuppa municipality wards, urging people to stay away from the reservoir and adjacent water flow zones. Safety awareness campaigns were carried out to prevent accidents.

The monsoon has also led to the overflowing of Hirekere and Hulikunte lakes in Bommaghatta, resulting in waterlogging in nearby agricultural fields. Many villages in Sandur, Torangallu, and Choranur hoblis have reported minor flooding and inundation of farmlands, affecting local farmers.

Officials continue to monitor the situation, with precautionary measures in place to handle further inflow and ensure the safety of residents and agricultural assets.
