Agriculture Marketing Minister Shivanand Patil has stepped down from his MLA position, following a political challenge by Vijayapura City MLA Basanagowda R Patil (Yatnal). Patil submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker UT Khader at the Vidhana Soudha on Friday, formally vacating his seat representing the Basavan Bagevadi constituency.

Explaining his move, Patil stated that Yatnal had insulted him and his family in public. “Basana Gowda Patil had insulted in Vijayapura. He had made derogatory statements about my ancestors. I cannot tolerate such words. Therefore, I have submitted my resignation to the Speaker,” he told the media.

Yatnal had challenged Patil to contest against him from the Vijayapura constituency. In response, Patil accepted the challenge, stating he is ready to face Yatnal in Vijayapura or even in his own constituency. “I have accepted Yatnal's challenge. Let Yatnal resign, I will contest the elections in Vijayapura. Otherwise, let Yatnal come to Basavanabagewadi and contest the elections,” he added.

Patil clarified that this decision was made independently and without consulting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or his party. “I have not spoken to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or the party about this. This is my personal decision,” he said.

He also mentioned that his resignation should only be accepted if Yatnal also resigns, as challenged. Speaker UT Khader acknowledged receiving Patil’s resignation and said it would be reviewed. “He resigned out of respect for them,” the Speaker commented while speaking to the media.
