Mango growers concerned as fruits are falling off
Dharwad
A farmer calculates the yield of any crop by looking at the flowers and fruits of that crop. But recently, weather conditions have turned the farmer's calculations upside down. This time the mango had blossomed well. Good fruits had started to ripen. But now the fruits are falling suddenly, and the farmers are worried.
Mango is grown in about 12 thousand hectares of land in district. Among them, Alphonso mango is in demand even abroad. The mango orchards, which had been facing difficulties at the flowering stage for many years due to various reasons, did not have any such worries this time. The growers were hopeful that the mangoes had flowered well and the trees would be filled with fruits. However, now the mango plants have sprouted excessively and all the mango midi fruits are falling along with the flowers.
It is common for mangoes to lose their flowers and pods if they are affected by foggy weather or any other disease. That too in small quantities. Due to good rainfall last year, 90 percent of mango trees have sprouted excessively. Thus, the trees are shedding large amounts of flowers and pods to preserve the shoots.
In the region, scenes of old leaves, flowers and small mango pods falling from the base of mango trees are now being seen. Although the trees look beautiful with new shoots, the flowers and pods at the base have lost their strength, and mango growers are worried that this time too, their yield will be severely affected.
BOX
Overall, the mango crop has been a disappointment for growers, and it is ironic that farmers who were happy to see the abundance of fruit on the trees are now in tears.
