KRS is all set to set a new record of reaching the brim in June month
Mandya
If everything goes well, Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district, is all set to create a new record by reaching the brim in the month of June
The lifeline of the Old Mysuru region, the KRS dam, has reached a water level of 119.40 feet in the month of June, marking a record-breaking development and setting a new historical milestone.
Usually, the dam reaches full capacity only by the end of July or during August, but this year, due to the unusual monsoon rains in the Cauvery catchment area, the water level has already reached 119.60 feet. Officials have confirmed that this is the first time since the dam’s construction that such a level has been recorded in the month of June.
The dam has been filling up the brim during July, August or September depending upon the rains in the catchment areas. There are occasions when this reservoir had not filled to the brim due to failure of the monsoon. A few years ago, the then CM Siddaramaiah could not offer the bagina to the River Cauvery as the dam didn't fill up that time.
Key Highlights:
Maximum water level: 124.80 feet
Current level: 119.40 feet
Inflow: 13359 cusecs
Outflow 1664 cusecs
Remaining to full capacity: Only 5 tmc feet of water required to reach full capacity: Approx. 8 TMC (thousand million cubic feet)
Storage capacity: 49.452 TMC
To fill up this week?
Given the consistent inflow witnessed so far, it is expected that the dam may reach full capacity within the next week. This is a significant development for farmers, drinking water supply, and power generation in the Old Mysuru region, including Mandya, Mysuru, Channapatna, and Ramanagara.
A historic development:
It is noteworthy that this is the first time KRS Dam has recorded such high water levels in June. The dam is crucial not only to Karnataka’s water system but also serves as a major source of water released to Tamil Nadu.
The early onset of the monsoon this year has led to this record-breaking water accumulation at the KRS dam, giving hope to the people about water availability in the coming days.
