Kharge Laments Missing CM Post in 1999 Despite Efforts
Vijayapura
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has reignited the long-standing ‘Dalit CM’ debate within the party by recalling how he was overlooked for the chief minister’s post in 1999, despite leading efforts to bring the party to power.
Speaking at an event in Vijayapura on Sunday, Kharge said, “As CLP leader, I worked hard for Congress’ victory. But SM Krishna, who became KPCC president just four months before the polls, was made chief minister. My five years of effort went in vain.”
Kharge’s remarks come amid ongoing calls within the party to elevate a Dalit leader to the top post in Karnataka an issue raised previously by leaders like G Parameshwara.
Emphasising his steady rise through party ranks, Kharge said he never chased positions. “From block president in 1969 to AICC president, I’ve earned it through hard work.”
Reacting to his statement, Social Welfare Minister H C Mahadevappa said Kharge is fit for any constitutional post and deserves an opportunity. He also cited other Dalit Congress leaders who had served as CMs in the past, such as Damodaram Sanjivayya and Sushil Kumar Shinde.
Soon after Kharge’s comment, Jagalur MLA B Devendrappa called for a Dalit CM during the current term. “We are just one step away,” he said at a public event attended by Ministers Parameshwara and Mahadevappa.
The BJP was quick to respond. Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka accused Congress of “tokenism” and suppressing Dalit leadership. “The Gandhi family has always pulled down rising Dalit leaders. Look at how Anjaiah, Kesari, and even Kharge have been treated,” he alleged.
