Dr P Shivaraju, Additional Deputy Commissioner has asked people not to borrow loans for marriages and become role models.

He was speaking at the free mass wedding event organized on the premises of Sri Kanteshwara Temple in Nanjangud by the District Administration, the Hindu Religious Institutions, and Charitable Endowments Department here on Friday.

He said this initiative was started to prevent economically weaker and middle-class families from falling into financial hardship due to extravagant wedding expenses. Mangalyabhagya is a flagship programme of the state government, launched in 2020 and since then they had been holding free mass marriage.

Dr Shivaraj said one must not take loans to have a grand and lavish wedding and then struggle to repay the debt. By getting married in a simple way, financial savings can be made, and that money can be used for other important purposes. This time, 24 couples were married through the mass wedding, and he also expressed hope that at least 100 couples would participate next year.

Srikanta, President of City Municipal Council, praised the mass wedding organized by the Religious Endowments Department, and said that it is a good initiative to prevent extravagant spending. It helps poor people to marry free of cost. Therefore, more such mass weddings should be organized.

Tahsildar Shivakumar Kasanur, Jagadish Kumar from Sri Kanteshwara Temple, TK Harish, Assistant Director, Department of Information and Public Relations, Circle Inspector Ravindra, and members of the public were present at the event.
