Haveri
This is one of the districts with the highest number of deaths in road accidents in the state. More than 200 people die in road accidents in the district every year. Most of the deaths were of bikers.
In 2021, 1,236 people were injured in road accidents and the death toll was 230. In 2022, 1,385 people were injured in road accidents and 284 died. As of October 2023, 1,134 people were injured in road accidents and 228 people had died.
In most of the cases, the bikers died due to severe head injuries. It is a matter of concern that most of them are teenagers. Only families who lost their loved ones in road accidents are washing their hands in tears. Haveri District Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar has now launched a helmet awareness programme to control road accidents and prevent deaths. For this, 60 points in 19 police stations in the district to create helmet awareness have been selected. Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar, who himself is on the road, said that he is checking the helmets himself and our staff should wear helmets first. We have to be right before we tell others. Also, anyone who is riding a two-wheeler should have a helmet on their head. Otherwise, they will be asked to pay fine. The Police personnel, who initially warned the riders without helmets for a few days, are now penalising the riders without helmets. The Police personnel are especially congratulating the bikers who come wearing helmets by offering them roses.
