Honnavar taluk in Uttara Kannada district achieved the top position across the state in Bhoo Suraksha project. The taluk secured the leading position amongst non-pilot taluks statewide, in digitising and uploading records. Taluk has successfully processed 1,557,896 pages, receiving commendation from both the Revenue Minister and Department Commissioner.
Initially piloted in Sirsi taluk,   the project now operates across all 12 taluks. The process involves scanning, indexing, and uploading records from tahsildar office archives within prescribed timelines. Eventually, citizens will access their land records online, from their homes without office visits.
The Bhoo Suraksha project facilitates safeguarding and swift retrieval of vital records, as land records form an essential component of revenue administration, documenting the transaction history of land parcels across decades. These records hold significant importance for the public, particularly in matters concerning land ownership, inheritance, and legal proceedings. The current archival system faces numerous challenges, including misplacement of documents due to inadequate indexing. Citizen often endure lengthy waiting periods, sometimes spanning days, to obtain copies. The manual search process through vast collections, combined with limited staff, results in significant delays.
The current practice of repeatedly handling and copying aged land records for public access, leads to their deterioration. Multiple requests for records from the same village necessitate repeated handling of documents, accelerating their wear. The revenue department bears substantial responsibility of maintaining these records securely.

The state government's Bhoo Suraksha project provides technological solutions to expedite record retrieval whilst reducing physical handling, thereby ensuring better preservation.
This initiative ensures permanent digital preservation of crucial land records. Digitisation process minimises physical handling, preventing deterioration. Citizen can access records online, without visiting offices, promoting efficient and transparent administration. The system prevents unauthorised alteration and fraudulent documentation, with fewer staff for management.
