KOPPAL
A cave painting and rock inscription, believed to be around three thousand years old and dating back to the Copper Age, has been discovered by a team of local history researchers in HR Ramulu Nagar in Gangavati of district.
A team led by historical researcher and Professor Dr Sharanappabasappa Kolkara has discovered Stone Age cave paintings and a historical inscription at the Kathekallu hill.
Manjunatha Doddamani, Chandrasekhar Kumbar and Nagaraj Shivpur, members of the team led by Dr. Sharanbasappa Kolkar discovered these historical ancient traces near Katte Kallugudda, one km away from Gaddi Durgamma temple in HR Ramulu Nagar.
A Kallasare facing south at the base of the hill contains a 17th-century Kannada inscription. And another Kallasare at the top of the hill contains paintings by early humans, the team said.
Explaining the inscription, researcher Dr. Sharanabasappa Kolkar said, “The inscription is in 5 lines and is written with images of the sun, moon, dvinama and bow and arrow. The inscription tells about the donation of 22 Khanduga fields by Pati Chinnayaka for the worship of Lord Ramnath. The inscription ends with Jayatu Mastu. There are many writings and many errors in the inscription.”
The vast cave at the top of the hill was a temporary dwelling place for primitive man, with several images painted in red on its roof. The team noticed images of couples holding hands, images of many symbols, and images of a man standing on the other side.
Based on the style of the paintings, these date back to the Stone Age, 3,000 years ago. A series of stone blocks are found on the cleft rock adjacent to this burial ground. When these are struck with a piece of stone, a kind of sound is produced.
