The historical watchtower located at the fort of Gadada Maradi has collapsed due to unscientific construction practices, a concern that has been raised by local residents. It has been seven months since this incident, and the lack of urgent action for its repair has led to significant dissatisfaction among the public.

During the previous BJP government, several development works were undertaken at this site, including the installation of an 80-foot flagpole in the middle of the tower. The flag, measuring 16X24 feet, was traditionally hoisted on August 15 and January 26, becoming a symbol of pride for the local populace.

The collapse of half of the watchtower during recent rains has raised alarms. After the incident, officials from the Kittur Development Authority had placed a signboard prohibiting entry to the area, which has since disappeared, while the ruins remain unattended, according to local residents.

“The Gadada Maradi has historical significance. During the princely state era, it served as a watchtower. It was used to keep vigil against enemy forces,” explained senior residents.

Krishna Bairegowda, the president of the Kittur Development Authority, previously inspected the collapsed structure and assured the community of repairs. However, this assurance seems to have gone unfulfilled, much to the residents' frustration.

“The watchtower, with its historical background, has been lying in ruins for several months. The authority needs to undertake its reconstruction without delay. Neglecting this matter is unacceptable,” stated Rajguru Samsthana Kalmath, Madhival Rajayogendra Swamiji, expressing the urgency of the situation.

Babasahab Patil, a local MLA, has submitted proposals to the government regarding the repair of the collapsed watchtower. He has also presented this matter to Minister Krishna Bairegowda to secure funding for immediate restoration work.
