In an innovative move to combine technology with environmental education, the Vanasiri Eco Club at Govt High School, Badaga Yekkar has introduced QR codes on newly planted saplings around the campus. These codes offer detailed information about each plant, including its scientific name, uses, importance, region of growth, and common name.
Head Mistress Indira N Rao explained that the initiative was part of the education department's Earth Day celebrations. The department suggested using QR codes for saplings, and the idea was brought to life by mathematics teacher K Ramya with help from English teacher Anith Kumar.
The project also educated students on how QR codes are created, helping them better appreciate the significance of plants. The school, which lost its greenery due to road widening, received 13 saplings from farmer and former teacher Ronald Fernandes. These were planted along the new compound wall, built with support from MLA Umanath Kotian.
Class 10 students have been assigned the responsibility of caring for the saplings for the next year. The school, which had 132 students last year, has already gained 32 new enrolments in Class 8. Additionally, Anith Kumar introduced a multilingual school news bulletin in Kannada, English, Hindi, Beary, Konkani, and Tulu.
The school’s sports team, led by PT teacher Vidyalatha, recently participated in a national kho kho tournament in Chennai and is now preparing for their next match.
