Government school boasts of unique sports lab
Udupi
In a pioneering effort, Government High School, Avarse in Brahmavar, Udupi, has established the Bhujanga Shetty Sports Lab, a first-of-its-kind facility in a government school in Karnataka. The lab promotes physical fitness while actively monitoring vital health parameters for about 127 students, along with visitors from neighbouring schools, teachers, and parents.
Conceptualised by national award-winning physical education teacher Azad Mohammad with support from the school’s alumni, the lab features equipment that measures over 18 health parameters, including muscle strength, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure. It also includes sports-specific tools like hand grip testers and devices for assessing muscle strength such as the hamstring.
The lab acts as an interactive hub where students are trained to assess their own health metrics and assist peers. Students from nearby schools regularly visit, and parents are encouraged to use the facility during parent-teacher meetings.
A ‘Wall of Fame’ proudly displays photographs and awards of students who have excelled in various sports, with some representing at the national level over the past six years. The initiative was showcased at the state level by DIET Vice-Principal Ashok Kamath three months ago.
Inspired by his role as a state resource person, Mohammad began developing the sports lab two years ago, integrating scientific monitoring with sports promotion, thereby setting a new benchmark for government schools.

Teachers from nearby schools also use the lab to monitor their health, said headmaster Ramesh Kulal. Besides health checks, students learn practical tips like reducing salt intake to control blood pressure and are trained to use technology, including WhatsApp, to share their health updates and data effectively.
