CHITRADURGA: A drug-free society can only be achieved with collective effort and active participation from all sections of the community, said retired Health Education Officer NS Manjunath. He was speaking at an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) programme held at Amrit Nursing College on the occasion of World Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Health Department, Indian Red Cross Society, and Amrit Nursing College. Addressing the gathering, Manjunath emphasized the need to create awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse, particularly among college students in urban areas, who are increasingly vulnerable to addiction.

Highlighting the significance of the day, Manjunath noted that the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on September 7, 1987, to observe this day annually and raise global awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Dr. Sridhar, a psychologist from the Department of Mental Health, stressed this year’s theme—"Break the links, strengthen prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services"—and called for a community-centered approach to tackle addiction.

Gayatri Shivaram, President of the Indian Red Cross Society, said the Red Cross would actively design programs to educate youth and work towards a drug-free society. College Principal Mohammad Wajahatullah urged students to begin with self and family in building a drug-free environment.

A pledge was taken during the event, and the Red Cross Society distributed masks to students. The programme also saw the participation of District Red Cross Secretary N. Mazhar Ullah, member Shivaram, lecturers, and students.

“Addiction of youth to drugs not only hampers their development but also causes severe health issues and mental stress for family members. Parents must remain vigilant and closely monitor their children’s activities,” said Dr. Sridhar, Psychologist from the Department of Mental Health, during the awareness programme.
