Environmentalists protest tree cutting for road expansion
Mysuru
Several people, including environmentalists, have expressed opposition to the cutting down of large trees on the road next to the city's District Superintendent of Police office for road expansion.
Environmentalists, including Rajmata Pramoda Devi Wodeyar, have expressed their anger over the cutting down of 40 huge trees, some of which are about 50 years old, for the widening of Hyder Ali Road from the city's Superintendent of Police office circle three days ago. They have also said that they will hold a candlelight protest tomorrow in this regard.
Talking about the clearing of trees on both sides of Hyderali Road, Rajmata Pramoda Devi Wodeyar expressed her sadness, saying, there was no need to cut down trees for everything. Instead of cutting down trees, a different solution could have been found for that problem. It takes many years to plant a sapling and turn it into a tree. If there was a need, let the trees be cut down. However, there was no need to cut down trees for this road. A solution could have been found by experienced and intelligent engineers and experts to solve this road problem.
Mysore city is a heritage city, and it is not right to cut down huge trees in such a city. Forest officials should pay attention to this. Environmentalist Joseph Hoohar has urged that this should not happen in the future.
As per the request submitted by the Mysore Metropolitan Corporation for widening the road from the Superintendent of Police office circle to the Kalikamba temple, the Forest Department has given permission as per the rules to remove 40 Peltophorum species trees for road widening, DCF Basavaraju said in his press release.
