Electricity tariff hike adds to public burden

The Karnataka government has announced a 36 paise per unit increase in electricity tariffs, adding to the financial strain on citizens following a recent hike in milk prices. The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) issued the order on Thursday, stating that the new rates will take effect from April 1.

According to KERC, the tariff hike is necessary to cover expenses related to pensions, gratuities of electricity department employees, and costs incurred under free electricity schemes.

This increase comes amid a series of price hikes across the state. Metro fares were recently raised, KSRTC bus fares were increased earlier, and auto fares also saw an upward revision. Now, with the rise in electricity costs, the public is feeling the burden of escalating expenses.

As essential services become costlier, concerns are growing over the financial impact on ordinary citizens.
