Eight jackfruit cultivars from the Tubagere region have been granted national-level patent rights, marking a significant milestone for local farmers and horticultural innovation.
During a event held in Tubagere to promote jackfruit cultivation, the patent certificates for these eight distinct cultivars were distributed to farmers from various villages in the region. These cultivars have been designated with the code ‘NR-1,’ and farmers now have the freedom to name and market these varieties as they see fit.
Krishna Maatanadi, a farmer and patent holder under the Plant Variety Protection and Farmers’ Rights Act (PPFRA), expressed his pride, stating, "Our jackfruit variety has received national recognition. For the next 20 years, no one else can cultivate or sell this cultivar without our permission. Only with the owner’s consent can others grow or trade these plants."
Dr. Narayanagouda, Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore Gandhi Institute of Technology, highlighted the importance of local efforts in enhancing the value of jackfruit and raising awareness about its health benefits. He pointed out that these jackfruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, electrolytes, potassium, and amino acids, making them a nutritious fruit. He urged farmers to responsibly preserve their patented cultivars.
The Tubagere Jackfruit Growers Association, District Horticulture Department, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the Horticulture Department’s Plant Diversity and Farmers’ Rights Protection Authority collaborated to scientifically authenticate the unique qualities of these eight cultivars. Their efforts aim to recognize the distinct taste, aroma, and quality of these jackfruits at both national and international levels.
