Dispute erupts over administration of Raghavendra Swamy Mutt
Koppal
A dispute has erupted over the administration of the Raghavendra Swamy Mutt in Koppal, leading to the cancellation of scheduled events.
For years, the mutt on Gadag Road has been managed by local devotees. However, tensions arose when Subhudendratheertha Swamiji of Mantralaya Mutt arrived on March 26 to deliver blessings and a discourse. A discussion about the mutt’s administration followed, sparking disagreements. The Swamiji, instead of entering the premises, returned without participating in further events.
The conflict stems from the historical governance of the mutt. Previously led by Hulagi Ranganath Acharya, his passing left a leadership void. According to Mantralaya Mutt, documents from 1971 confirm its authority over the Koppal mutt, and its Swamiji announced plans to appoint a new administrator. This statement angered local devotees, who insist the mutt has always been independent.
As a result, hundreds of devotees gathered at the Swamiji’s residence in Basavanagar, Koppal, to voice their opposition. The situation escalated, and the disagreement led to the cancellation of key religious events, including Ramadevara Pooja and Tulabhara.
With tensions high, local devotees continue to resist the claim that their mutt falls under Mantralaya Mutt’s jurisdiction, demanding that its traditional management remain unchanged.
