Contract workers at Yermaras WTPS stage protest
Raichur
In Yermaras, Raichur district, approximately 1,500 contract workers at the WTPS (Warp, Thermal Power Station) have gone on an indefinite strike to demand the fulfillment of various demands, including pay raises.
The workers have stopped attending to their duties in a coordinated protest, and their action is expected to have severe repercussions on the power production at the facility. With load shedding already a concern in the state, the workers' strike poses the risk of further crippling electricity generation at a time when demand is spiking.
Workers from multiple departments within the power plant have expressed their anger towards the Power Make Company, alleging that they are being treated unfairly regarding their wages. They claim that salaries are not being disbursed properly and that there is a lack of equity in pay.
The Yermaras WTPS has a generation capacity of 1,600 megawatts, but currently, only 839 megawatts are being produced due to technical issues and maintenance work. The ongoing strike, combined with existing challenges, could worsen the state's load shedding situation.
The unyielding struggle led by the RTC (Ready and Trained Workers' Union) and WTPS Contract Workers Association has raised serious concerns about the potential impact on electricity generation, making it a critical situation for the state's power supply.
