Cantonment Board area to merge with the city corporation
Belagavi
In a significant development, the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has decided to facilitate the transfer of residential colonies, markets, bungalows, grounds, and open spaces of the Belagavi Cantonment Board (BCB) to the BCC. The proposal was pending with the BCC since 2023.
The finance standing committee passed a resolution in this regard during a meeting. The meeting, Chaired by Netravati Bhagwat, was attended by Mayor Mangesh Pawar, Deputy Mayor Vani Joshi, and other key members. Revenue Deputy Commissioner Reshma Talikoti presented the current status of the proposal and shared comprehensive information, leading to the committee's consensus. The subject will be placed in the next council body meeting for detailed discussion and approval.
Initially, the BCB was unwilling to transfer the bungalows and open spaces, showing interest only in transferring the residential and market areas. However, Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar and Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi took exception to this, demanding the complete transfer of the area, barring the military campus, and corresponded with the defence ministry in this regard.
After a series of meetings, the BCB accepted the transfer of the bungalows' area, grounds, and other public places. This development will lead to an increase in the number of wards in the BCC, with an expansion of its area. Presently, there are 58 wards under the BCC and seven wards under the BCB. After the merger of both, the number of wards will increase to 65.
