The Action Committee Against Toll Gate, Surathkal, has issued a stern warning of intensified protests if the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) fails to repair the potholes on the Surathkal–Nanthoor highway stretch. Every monsoon, this stretch develops dangerous potholes that severely threaten two-wheeler riders’ safety.

Coordinator Muneer Katipalla highlighted that with the onset of the first rains this year, hazardous potholes appeared once again, leading to the first fatality. A resident of Janatha Colony in Surathkal, riding his two-wheeler near Panambur, fell into a pothole and was subsequently run over by a tanker, resulting in his death. “It’s uncertain how many more precious lives will be lost if urgent action isn’t taken,” Muneer said.

The Action Committee has consistently demanded full repairs before the monsoon season to prevent further tragedies. Despite their peaceful protests in Kuloor and repeated appeals to public representatives, no significant action has been taken. Muneer condemned the lack of response, adding, “Instead of addressing this critical issue, people’s representatives are engaged in vote bank politics.”

The committee stressed that providing good roads to facilitate safe travel must be the government’s top priority. Unless immediate repairs are carried out, the committee plans to escalate protests to demand the safety and well-being of all highway users.

People's representatives must urgently repair the many potholes on the highway to prevent a series of deaths this monsoon, Muneer warned. He urged authorities not to force intense protests and called for compensation to the bereaved family of the deceased by the highway authority.
