Yarraji, Shirse win third consecutive gold in Nationals

Andhra Pradesh’s Jyothi Yarraji and Maharashtra’s Tejas Shirse clinched their third straight gold medals in hurdles at the National Games, setting new Games records in the process.

Yarraji, the reigning Asian champion and Hangzhou Asian Games silver medallist, clocked 13.10 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles final, breaking her previous National Games record of 13.22 seconds from 2023. Her national record remains 12.78 seconds. Moumita Mondal of West Bengal took silver with 13.36 seconds, while Tamil Nadu’s Nithya Ramraj secured bronze in 13.60 seconds.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, Shirse finished in 13.65 seconds, surpassing his own National Games record of 13.71 seconds set last year. His national record stands at 13.41 seconds. Tamil Nadu’s Manav Rajanarayanan won silver with 14.03 seconds, while Kerala’s Muhammed Lazan claimed bronze with 14.23 seconds.

Former national record holder Siddhanth Thingalaya of Maharashtra, who won gold in the 2015 edition, did not finish the final race.

Both Yarraji and Shirse have been competing in the 60m hurdles indoor circuit abroad and hold national records in the event. Their dominant performances reaffirm their status as India’s top hurdlers.
