The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), whose National Sports Federation (NSF) status has been restored, has announced that selection trials for the upcoming Asian Championship will be held on March 15 at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. This will be the first official trial conducted under the new WFI administration after the federation faced suspension just three days following the election of new office bearers on December 21, 2023. The trials will determine the top wrestlers who will represent India at the Asian Championship scheduled to take place in Amman, Jordan, from March 25 to 30.

According to a circular issued by WFI, weigh-ins for all categories, including men’s freestyle, women’s wrestling, and Greco-Roman, will be conducted on the same day as the trials, and all participants will be granted a relaxation of 2 kg. The WFI had been unable to select national teams during its suspension as the federation was dragged to court by wrestlers protesting against the former chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, questioning WFI’s functioning and authority. The suspension was lifted after WFI implemented necessary reforms, including moving its office from Brij Bhushan’s premises.
