Voges backs Inglis for No. 4 Test role
Melbourne
Former Australia batter Adam Voges has expressed strong support for Josh Inglis to succeed at No. 4 in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies. Despite limited first-class experience in the top order, Voges believes Inglis is technically sound and ready for the challenge.
Inglis was confirmed to play in the first Test in Barbados next week, after Marnus Labuschagne was dropped and Steven Smith ruled out due to injury. Alongside Inglis, young opener Sam Konstas was also selected. Konstas is expected to open with Usman Khawaja as Australia aims to stabilize their top order.
With Cameron Green likely to retain the No. 3 spot and Travis Head fixed at No. 5, Inglis may bat at No. 4 to reduce changes once Smith returns for the second Test in Grenada.
Voges, who coached Inglis in Western Australia, recalled trying him at No. 3 in domestic cricket. “We tested Josh at three while keeping, which was tough. But technically, he’s capable,” Voges said. “Without the keeping duties, No. 4 is a role he can handle. These Tests are a great chance for him to prove himself.”
Inglis, now 30, has been in top form across formats in 2025. He scored a century on his Test debut in Sri Lanka at No. 5. However, his record at No. 3 and No. 4 is minimal, with just one fifty and a best of 44. His strongest performances have come at No. 6, where he averages over 50 with four first-class centuries.
