Venkatesh Kenche shines in Europe tour
New Delhi
India 'A' men's hockey team has made a strong start to their Europe tour with big wins against Ireland, 6-1 and 6-0. A key player in these victories is 24-year-old forward Venkatesh Kenche, who credits his success to India’s tough domestic hockey circuit.
Kenche, known for his quick speed and attacking play, returned to the national setup after earlier stints at junior camps in 2016 and 2018. He said, “Playing in a strong domestic league helped me improve. I worked hard on my basics and fitness.”
He played a major role in Hockey Maharashtra’s bronze medal at the National Games and reaching the quarter-finals in the Senior Nationals. Making his India 'A' debut was emotional for him. “It’s a dream come true,” he said. “My family always supported me.”
Kenche admitted to feeling nervous at first but soon found his rhythm. He wants to improve his goal-scoring and is hopeful about the team’s future. India ‘A’ will next play France on Saturday (today).
