Spain and Italy started their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaigns with strong wins on late Thursday night. The games began with a minute’s silence for Portugal and Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother, who both died in a car crash the night before. Fans and players paid their respects in a very touching way.

Spain, the world champions, crushed Portugal 5-0 in their first Group B match at Wankdorf Stadium in Bern. Esther Gonzalez scored early, just 87 seconds into the game, with a clever flick. Soon after, 18-year-old Vicky Lopez scored another goal after a loose ball from Portugal’s goalkeeper.

Spain’s captain Alexia Putellas, who missed the last Euros because of injury, showed her class by scoring the third goal with perfect control and a sharp finish. Gonzalez then added her second goal before halftime. Spain completely controlled the first half, moving and passing beautifully, leaving Portugal struggling to keep up. In added time, substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto scored a nice header to seal the win.

In Sion, Italy beat Belgium 1-0 in a tight match at Stade de Tourbillon. This win was important for Italy as they took revenge for their Euro 2022 loss to Belgium. Arianna Caruso scored the only goal right before halftime after a smart pass from Lucia Di Guglielmo.

Italy’s victory gives them a good start in a tough group where Spain are the favorites. Next, Spain will play Belgium, and Italy will face Portugal on Monday. These games will be key in deciding who moves forward to the quarterfinals. Fans can expect more exciting football action ahead.
