South Africa has appointed Shukri Conrad as the new head coach for its men’s cricket team across all three formats. Conrad had been the Test team’s coach since January 2023 and now takes over the ODI and T20I teams as well, following Rob Walter’s resignation last month.
Conrad said he felt proud to take on the expanded role and called it a special opportunity. He praised the strong talent in South Africa’s white-ball cricket and said he believes the team has the potential to achieve something great.
“Coaching the Test side has been the greatest privilege of my cricket journey, and to now lead in all formats is incredibly special,” he said. “We have a strong base to build on.”
His new journey begins in July with a T20I tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Before that, the Proteas will face Australia in the World Test Championship final on June 11 at Lord’s. Conrad’s contract will run through the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which South Africa will host.
Cricket South Africa’s Enoch Nkwe praised Conrad’s leadership in red-ball cricket and expressed confidence that he would bring the same structure and purpose to white-ball formats. Nkwe said Conrad has built strong bonds with players and understands what international cricket demands.
The board believes Conrad is the right person to guide the team forward and improve performances across formats. With this move, South Africa aims to unify coaching leadership and boost its strength on the global stage.
