As India prepares for a five-match Test series against England starting Friday (today) at Headingley, former coach Gary Kirsten praised Shubman Gill, calling him a future leader with all the right qualities.

Gill takes over as India’s Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement. With Virat Kohli also stepping away from the format, Gill will now also bat at number four, taking on a huge responsibility in a new-look Indian side.

Kirsten, who worked closely with Gill as Gujarat Titans’ batting coach in the IPL, spoke highly of the young captain. “Shubman is smart, understands the game well, and is very disciplined. He trains hard and leads by example, which is important for a captain,” Kirsten said on JioHotstar.

He noted that leadership brings pressure and constant scrutiny, but Gill has the “raw materials” to handle it. “He walks the talk and sets a great example,” Kirsten added.

Gill has only played three Tests in England so far, with an average below 15. But many believe he can rise to the challenge.

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden also backed Gill, saying, “He has big shoes to fill, but time and experience build legacies. He’s got the talent and leadership traits to succeed.”

Hayden cautioned against comparing Gill with Kohli, India’s most successful Test captain. But he believes the series in England will help Gill grow into the role.

With a fresh start and a young captain, India’s Test journey under Shubman Gill will be closely watched by fans and cricket experts alike.
