Shastri warns BCCI on Bumrah rest
London
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has cautioned against resting Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test against England, warning that it could cost India dearly in the ongoing five-match series. After India’s loss in the first Test, Shastri expressed concerns that dropping their pace spearhead at such a critical juncture may result in a 2-0 deficit.
Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket, Shastri noted that Bumrah had earlier hinted at playing only three Tests in the series. “Which three he plays is uncertain,” said Shastri. “But if he is planning to skip a match, it might be the second Test, with a return expected at Lord’s. That’s a risk, especially when you’re already one match down.”
Shastri emphasized India’s recent overseas struggles—losing 3-0 to New Zealand and a series in Australia—and stressed the need to bounce back immediately. “This is a tough series. England had injury issues in their bowling attack, and India missed a chance to go 1-0 up. Now, it’s catch-up time,” he said.
He urged the Indian team to show resilience and character. “The knockout punch must come in the next match. If not, we’re looking at serious trouble. Every missed opportunity increases the pressure. They must realise what’s at stake.” With Shubman Gill leading and India searching for answers after the defeat, the management now faces a pivotal decision on Bumrah’s availability for the Edgbaston Test. Shastri’s comments reflect growing concerns over strategy and squad rotation at a crucial point in the series.
