Sana Mir warns of tough World Cup Qualifier

Former captain Sana Mir believes Pakistan faces a stern challenge in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier, calling it one of the most competitive editions yet. As hosts, Pakistan are eyeing one of the two remaining spots for the main event in India later this year.

Sana, who led Pakistan through qualifiers in 2008, 2011, and 2017, emphasized the quality of competing teams. “West Indies, under Hayley Matthews, have been impressive. Bangladesh have also made strides, beating India and competing well with South Africa and Ireland,” she said in an ICC statement.

She praised Pakistan’s young captain Fatima Sana, but cautioned that changes in the squad and strong rivals like Ireland, Scotland, and Thailand make qualification far from guaranteed. “This tournament will be close. West Indies may be favourites, but the rest are neck-and-neck,” she noted.

Sana fondly recalled previous qualifiers — especially 2009, when Pakistan ended a 12-year World Cup absence, and 2011, when they beat South Africa in Bangladesh. She stressed the importance of starting strong: “One wrong step adds pressure for the whole tournament.”

The 2025 squad blends youth and experience, including Sidra Ameen, Muneeba Ali, Aliya Riaz, and Diana Baig, whose bowling rhythm is back. Mir hopes the high stakes bring out their best.

“With experienced players guiding the youngsters, they must now execute under pressure. Batting depth will be key,” she concluded.
