Rangers FC have appointed former Southampton manager Russell Martin as their new head coach on a three-year contract. The 39-year-old was chosen ahead of notable candidates including Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti.

Martin brings solid experience, having managed over 250 matches at MK Dons, Swansea City, and most recently, Southampton, whom he led to Premier League promotion in 2024. As a player, he was a Scotland international and captain of Norwich City. He also had a brief loan spell with Rangers in 2018.

Speaking about his return, Martin said, “It’s a privilege to lead Rangers. I know the passion, history, and expectations. I’m here to set high standards, win matches, win trophies, and make fans proud.”

Joining him are assistant coach Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen. Preparations for the new season are already underway, with Martin eager to meet the players and build a strong team.

Martin emphasized aggressive, possession-based football. “We want to play brave, dominant football and stand up in big moments,” he said.

Rangers recently came under new US-led ownership, headed by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. The club sacked former manager Philippe Clement in February after 16 months. Former captain Barry Ferguson served as interim manager.

Sporting director Kevin Thelwell praised Martin’s tactical growth, saying, “Russell stood out. His teams press hard, dominate games, and reflect the winning spirit we want. His Premier League experience will help guide Rangers to success at home and in Europe.”
