Pakistan may miss Men’s Asia Cup hockey
New Delhi
Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup hockey tournament in India is in serious doubt following recent tensions. A Hockey India official stated that they are in touch with the government and expect instructions soon. The official said, "We are in contact with the government, and I don’t think the Pakistan team will be allowed to participate."
The Men’s Asia Cup will be held in Rajgir, Bihar, from August 29 to September 9 at the new Rajgir Hockey Stadium. This tournament is an important qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup, which will be hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.
The uncertainty over Pakistan’s involvement follows the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, and Operation Sindoor. These incidents have led to strong public demands to bar Pakistan from sports events in India.
With just two months left before the tournament begins, Hockey India is still waiting for official clearance from the government regarding Pakistan’s entry.
Pakistan's participation in the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025, scheduled in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10, is also uncertain. In this junior tournament, Pakistan has been grouped with India in the expanded 24-team format.
Pakistan last played hockey in India in 2023 during the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. During that tournament, the Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, defeated Malaysia in the final to win their fourth title.
As sports fans wait for a final decision, the situation highlights the growing link between politics and sports. Whether Pakistan will be allowed remains to be seen, but it is clear that security and public sentiment will play a key role.
