Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra is setting his sights on the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September, calling it the season’s ultimate goal. Currently preparing for the Golden Spike Athletics Meet in Ostrava, Chopra remains grounded despite his recent success.

The 27-year-old Olympic champion is riding high on his career-best 90.12m throw, achieved at the season-opening Diamond League in Doha. He followed it with another victory at the Paris Diamond League, beating Germany’s Julian Weber with an 88.16m throw.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Tuesday’s meet, Chopra said he is not pressuring himself to consistently breach the 90m mark. “I’ve already hit 90m this year. Now I’m focused on training, staying injury-free, and competing well in Tokyo,” he said.

Chopra credited his coach, Jan Železný—the Czech javelin legend—for guiding him technically and mentally. “Training in Nymburk has been great. I feel strong, and I’m excited to compete here in Ostrava, where legends like Usain Bolt have run,” he added.

Chopra is also enthusiastic about hosting the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru on July 5, which will be his first major competition on home soil featuring international athletes. “It’s special to have India excited about athletics. I want to give back to the sport,” he said. Coach Železný praised Chopra’s progress, calling his performances crucial for the global javelin scene. With a gold in Tokyo 2020 and silver in Paris 2024, Chopra now aims to reclaim his world title this September.
