Neeraj Chopra wins Paris Diamond League with 88.16m
Paris
India’s Neeraj Chopra secured a dominant victory at the Paris Diamond League, claiming the title with a brilliant first-round throw of 88.16m. Chopra made an immediate impact, launching his javelin to 88.16m on his opening attempt — a mark that remained unmatched for the rest of the competition. Despite fouls and no-marks during his next three throws, the Olympic gold medallist’s opening effort was enough to keep him comfortably in the lead.
Germany’s Julian Weber came close, registering a best throw of 87.88m, while Brazil’s Mauricio Luiz da Silva finished third with a throw of 86.62m. Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott also impressed early on, recording an 80.94m throw in the first round and improving slightly to 81.66m in the second.
While Weber pushed Chopra with throws of 83.13m and 84.50m in the middle rounds, he couldn’t surpass the 88m mark. Chopra concluded the contest with a final throw of 82.89m, sealing a commanding victory. Da Silva closed with 78.56m, leaving the Indian star atop the podium.
Despite his struggles to register further valid throws after his first attempt, Chopra’s early brilliance proved decisive in the end. The Olympic champion will next compete in the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic on July 5, an event that was postponed from May due to tensions between India and Pakistan. The Diamond League win further underlines Chopra's status as one of the sport's most consistent and elite javelin throwers.
