Modi hails Bodoland’s sporting transformation
New Delhi
In his latest Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the transformative role of sports in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), highlighting the Bodoland CEM Cup as a symbol of peace, unity, and renewed identity.
Calling the tournament a “celebration of unity and hope,” Modi commended the initiative for channeling youth energy toward constructive pursuits. “Bodoland is emerging with a fresh identity and vigor. The enthusiasm and confidence of the youth are visible on the football pitch,” he said.
The Bodoland CEM Cup is held across multiple administrative levels—from village councils to the council-level championship—ensuring broad participation. Modi emphasized that over 3,700 teams and nearly 70,000 players, including a substantial number of young women, are taking part, signaling a dramatic social shift in the region.
He also lauded the rise of footballers like Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurba Narzary, and Manbir Basumatari, saying they are not just athletes but symbols of Bodoland’s evolving national identity. Reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma credited Modi’s leadership for the peaceful transformation of BTR. “The region that once symbolized insurgency now represents peace and progress,” Sarma posted on social media.
Adding momentum to this progress, BTC Chief Pramod Boro announced the construction of a stadium in each of the 40 assembly constituencies at Rs 5 crore per venue, in memory of Bodo leader Bir Chilagang Basumatary. The developments come as BTR prepares for upcoming elections, with major parties, including BJP and UPPL, deciding to contest independently.
