In the hill districts of Senapati and Ukhrul in Manipur, local sports are bringing communities together and inspiring positive change. In Senapati, the age-old tradition of Naga wrestling continues to thrive. This traditional sport, where wrestlers grip each other’s loincloths and try to throw their opponent off balance, is more than just a game—it’s a celebration of culture and unity.

Local wrestler P.S. Kholourai said, “Wrestling connects communities. It’s part of our tradition and brings people together.” RK Gedion, Secretary of the Senapati District Wrestling Association, added, “We were once known for headhunting, but now we promote peace through wrestling. Sports invite bonding, not battles.”

In Ukhrul’s Hungpung village, football is helping young people find purpose. Former footballer Ngaraipam K Stone started the Haokok United Football Academy in 2023. It now trains over 70 children, including 10 girls. “Sports help keep youth away from drugs,” Ngaraipam said. “Football teaches discipline and gives direction.”

The academy offers free coaching for girls, giving the Tangkhul community a chance to grow stronger and healthier.

From wrestling in Senapati to football in Ukhrul, Manipur is blending culture with progress. These efforts are not just creating athletes—they are building unity, pride, and hope for a brighter future.
