Konstas reflects on maiden Test call-up as mum tears up
Sydney
Australian cricketer Sam Konstas, currently representing Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL), shared the emotional moment of receiving his first-ever call-up to the national men's Test team. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series tied at 1-1, Konstas is set to debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the Boxing Day Test.
Speaking mid-game against Sydney Sixers on Saturday, the 19-year-old right-handed opener recalled the emotional phone call he received from George Bailey, informing him of his selection. “I was in the nets when I got the call from George Bailey. I called my parents right away, and they were very emotional. Mum was in tears, I was trying not to cry, and Dad was super proud,” Konstas said.
Reflecting on his journey, Konstas expressed gratitude for his opportunity. “It’s been an amazing journey with all the ups and downs,” he added.
Konstas was added to the squad at the expense of opener Nathan McSweeney, whose recent form raised concerns among selectors. McSweeney, who struggled with underwhelming performances in the first three Tests of the series, was dropped after failing to reach double digits in five of his six innings. Despite the disappointment, McSweeney remains determined to work hard and earn another opportunity.
“Yeah, I am devastated. I got the dream come true and then didn’t quite work the way I wanted. But it's all part of it, and I'll get my head down and get back in the nets,” McSweeney shared, vowing to be ready for his next chance.
