Keys, Collins, Anisimova, Sakkari advance in Charleston
Charleston
American players Madison Keys, Danielle Collins, and Amanda Anisimova moved into the Round of 16 at the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open on Tuesday night. Greece’s Maria Sakkari also secured her spot after a strong comeback.
Keys, the reigning Australian Open champion, battled past Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 7-6(4) in one hour and 42 minutes. Despite holding multiple match points in the second set, Keys had to stay composed to close out the match in a tiebreaker. She previously won this tournament in 2019.
Defending champion Collins made a dominant start to her title defense, defeating fellow American Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour. She extended her Charleston winning streak to seven matches.
“I was hitting my shots really well today, and my timing was great. You just have to stick to your process,” Collins said after the match.
Eighth-seeded Anisimova also had an impressive win, cruising past 2021 champion Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-2. The American, who reached the Charleston semifinals in 2022, is aiming for another deep run.
Meanwhile, Sakkari overcame a slow start to defeat Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic 6-3, 6-2. The Greek player, a semifinalist here last year, recovered from a 0-3 deficit in the first set to take control of the match.
In another match, American Hailey Baptiste beat Australia’s Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-4 to continue her strong performance in the tournament.
