Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as the mentor for Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the franchise announced on Thursday.
Pietersen, who previously played for Delhi Daredevils in 2012 and 2014, joins a coaching staff that includes head coach Hemang Badani, director of cricket Venugopal Rao, bowling coach Munaf Patel, and assistant coach Matthew Mott. This marks his first support staff role, having primarily worked as a commentator post-retirement.
A veteran of 200 T20 matches with 5,695 runs, Pietersen played 36 IPL games, amassing 1,001 runs across stints with Delhi, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Pune. He captained England between 2008 and 2009 and was instrumental in their 2010 ICC T20 World Cup victory, earning the Player of the Series award.
Parth Jindal, DC co-owner, expressed excitement over the appointment. “KP was one of the best modern-day batters, and having him is a valuable addition. We look forward to his guidance in achieving our objectives,” he said.
Earlier this week, DC named England’s T20 World Cup-winning coach Matthew Mott as assistant coach. Meanwhile, both DC and Kolkata Knight Riders have yet to announce their captains for IPL 2025.
