Former Sri Lankan Test player Kaushal Silva has been named head coach of the Hong Kong men’s cricket team. His appointment comes just ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup. Hong Kong will start their campaign against Afghanistan on September 9, followed by group matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Group B.

Silva played 39 Tests for Sri Lanka between 2011 and 2018. Known as a determined wicketkeeper-opener, he scored 13,932 runs in 209 first-class games, including 41 centuries. Three of those were in international cricket. After retiring in 2019, he worked in coaching roles across Sri Lanka, England, and Australia. This will be his first time as head coach of an international team.

Burji Shroff, Chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, praised Silva’s passion for developing talent. He said Silva’s coaching style matches Hong Kong’s goals of improving performance and spreading cricket across the country.

Silva, speaking about his new role, said his goal is to create a team with strong discipline and a winning attitude. He also plans to find and train young players to build for the future.
