New Zealand head coach Rob Walter has confirmed that star cricketer Kane Williamson is still dedicated to playing for the national team, even though he will skip the Zimbabwe tour and has turned down a central contract for the 2024–25 season.

Williamson, 34, wants to manage his workload and focus more on franchise cricket. However, Walter said Williamson’s future with the Black Caps is still bright and open.

Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, Walter shared that he had a long and friendly talk with Williamson. He praised Williamson’s huge contribution to New Zealand cricket over the years. Walter explained that even though Williamson stepped down as white-ball captain after last year’s T20 World Cup and is missing the Zimbabwe series, he is not quitting international cricket.

Walter clearly stated that Williamson remains very committed and wants to keep playing for the Black Caps. He also hinted that fans might see Williamson back soon.

New Zealand’s future matches include a T20 series against Australia and two white-ball series against England in October. They will also play against the West Indies at home in all formats. It is still unknown whether Williamson will join these matches, but the decision is entirely up to him.

Walter stressed that Williamson will always be welcomed back. He described Williamson as a "generational talent" who will always find a way to succeed in all formats. Walter believes that top players like Williamson can adjust and continue performing at the highest level.
