Kagiso Rabada cleared to play after drug ban
New Delhi
South Africa's fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been cleared to return to cricket after serving a one-month doping ban. The ban was shortened from three months after Rabada tested positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 league earlier this year, according to ESPNcricinfo. The South African Institute for Drug Free Sports (SAIDS) confirmed that Rabada failed a drug test on January 2, after playing for MI Cape Town against Durban Super Giants. He was informed of the result on April 1, while representing Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. The franchise had only said he left for an important personal matter without revealing details. SAIDS said Rabada has since completed an education and awareness programme aimed at preventing future substance abuse. The 29-year-old is now eligible to return and may feature as soon as Wednesday when Gujarat Titans face Mumbai Indians.
Cricket South Africa is not expected to impose further penalties. Similar cases have occurred in the past; Zimbabwe cricketers Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta were banned for four months in 2024 for similar offenses. Rabada issued a public apology: I am deeply sorry to all those I’ve let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. Before the ban, Rabada played two IPL matches this season, taking two wickets with an economy rate of 10.38. His swift return marks a second chance for the talented pacer to revive his international and league career with greater responsibility.
