Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 in a car crash in northern Spain. The accident happened just two weeks after his wedding to Rute Cardoso, leaving the football world and his fans shocked and heartbroken.
The crash took place early Thursday morning near Cernadilla in Zamora, close to the Portuguese border. Jota was driving a Lamborghini with his younger brother, Andre Silva, aged 26, who was also a professional footballer for FC Penafiel in Portugal. Sadly, both brothers died at the scene.
Local officials said the car suffered a tyre burst while overtaking on the A-52 highway. After losing control, the vehicle veered off the road, rolled over, and caught fire. Emergency services arrived quickly but confirmed both men had died.
The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received calls about the crash around kilometer 65. The fire brigade, police, and medical teams rushed to help but could not save the brothers. The highway is a common route for drivers traveling from Portugal to ports in Spain or heading toward France.
This tragedy comes shortly after Jota’s wedding on June 22 in Porto. The couple looked very happy in their wedding photos and shared special moments online. In his last Instagram post, Jota described himself as "the luckiest man in the world" to be Rute’s husband.
